SAMPSON COUNTY, NC (3-minute read) — Deputies in Sampson County are actively investigating a domestic violence incident that escalated into a shooting early Wednesday morning. The case began unfolding after a man suffering from multiple gunshot wounds was dropped off at the emergency room of Betsy Johnson Hospital in Dunn.

According to Capt. Marcus Smith of the Sampson County Sheriff’s Office, initial evidence points to a domestic assault that occurred at 4444 N. Spring Branch Road. Investigators believe the shooting was a legitimate act of self-defense to prevent further harm. Authorities have yet to release the identities of those involved, and the exact circumstances that led to the gunfire remain under investigation.

The wounded man was transferred by helicopter to N.C. Memorial Hospital in Chapel Hill due to the severity of his injuries. At this point, his current condition remains unknown. Hospital staff had immediately alerted the Harnett County Communications Center upon the man’s arrival, prompting a sheriff’s deputy to respond and conduct an initial interview. Through that conversation, it was determined that the shooting had actually occurred in neighboring Sampson County.

Investigation Points to Lawful Use of Force

Capt. Smith stated that based on the evidence collected so far, no charges are expected to be filed against the shooter. In self-defense cases, North Carolina law permits the use of deadly force when a person reasonably believes it is necessary to prevent death or serious bodily harm to themselves or others. While this case is still under review, it seems to fall under that legal protection.

Domestic violence situations are often unpredictable and dangerous, making them some of the most volatile calls for law enforcement and often life-threatening for the victims involved. Firearms used in self-defense in these scenarios can be lifesaving tools when used responsibly and lawfully.

Authorities have emphasized that once the investigation concludes, more details will be made public, including the identities of the individuals involved.

Safety Tip: In domestic violence situations, having a personal safety plan—and knowing the legal boundaries for self-defense with a firearm—is critical. Make sure to understand your state’s self-defense laws and always prioritize escape or de-escalation when possible.
