FAYETTEVILLE, NC (3-minute read) — A deadly shooting that unfolded at the Barton’s Landing Condominium Complex in Fayetteville, North Carolina, is gaining widespread attention after a video capturing the scene went viral. Police say the incident occurred at approximately 10:22 a.m. Sunday and resulted in the death of 36-year-old Donte Maurice Vanclief.

According to a man who filmed the aftermath—but requested anonymity—gunfire erupted just outside his residence. When he looked outside, he saw one man lying dead and another walking around with what appeared to be an AK-style rifle. The armed man reportedly claimed he had been ambushed and shot in self-defense.

Eyewitnesses Say the Shooting Was Justified

Witnesses told local media that the shooter believed he was being targeted and acted in defense after returning home. “Definitely self-defense,” one witness stated, adding that rumors circulated prior to the shooting that individuals had been “plotting” against the man who fired the shots.

Fayetteville Police, however, have neither confirmed nor denied the self-defense claims. In a public statement, they emphasized that all parties involved are cooperating and that there is no ongoing threat to the public.

As of Monday, evidence of the shooting—including bullet holes—remained visible at the scene. While law enforcement continues to investigate, no arrests have been made and no suspect descriptions have been released.

Self-defense laws in North Carolina permit the use of deadly force if a person reasonably believes it is necessary to prevent imminent death or serious bodily harm.

According to concealed carry experts, this case underscores the importance of understanding your legal rights, safe storage, and knowing when and how to engage a threat responsibly. Even if self-defense is claimed, each shot fired must be justified under the law.

Safety Tip: Always know your state’s self-defense laws and use only the level of force necessary to neutralize a legitimate threat. Train regularly to ensure safe and lawful firearm use under stress.
