HANAHAN, SC (2-minute read) — An attempted armed robbery in Hanahan turned deadly earlier this week, and local authorities have ruled the shooting as a justifiable act of self-defense.

According to the Hanahan Police Department, officers responded to Bowen Corner Avenue at 8:59 p.m. Monday after receiving reports of a shooting. When officers arrived, they found an individual—identified as 18-year-old Tre’sean White—dead at the scene.

Following an investigation, officials determined that White and another teen, Deonte Calden Trevon Lancit, had attempted to commit an armed robbery. During the confrontation, the intended victim shot White in self-defense. No charges will be filed against the shooter, according to police.

Authorities consulted with the Ninth Circuit Solicitor’s Office, who reviewed the circumstances and agreed with law enforcement’s decision. Lancit, also 18, was arrested and faces charges of armed robbery and possession of a firearm during the commission of a violent crime.

Understanding Self-Defense and Legal Firearm Use

South Carolina law allows individuals to use deadly force if they reasonably believe it is necessary to prevent death or great bodily harm. This is consistent with what’s commonly referred to as the “stand your ground” law. In this case, the victim was reportedly facing an imminent threat from armed assailants, which justified their defensive use of a firearm.

This incident underscores the reality that violent crime can unfold suddenly and escalate quickly. For responsible gun owners, knowing the law, practicing safe carry habits, and training regularly are crucial steps in being prepared to protect oneself within the boundaries of the law.

Safety Tip: If you carry a firearm for self-defense, regularly review your state’s laws and seek professional training to ensure you’re prepared both mentally and legally to act responsibly in high-stress situations.
