ST. PETERSBURG, FL (2-minute read) — Police in St. Petersburg have announced the arrest of a suspect linked to a deadly home invasion last month, where a resident lawfully used a firearm to protect their home. The incident occurred around 2 a.m. on April 16 in the 3400 block of 40th Street North.

According to the St. Petersburg Police Department, two men unlawfully entered a residence during the early morning hours. The homeowner, armed and presumably prepared for such an event, responded with gunfire. One suspect, later identified as 20-year-old Marcel James Williams, was struck and later died at a nearby hospital. The second intruder fled the scene.

Suspect Turns Himself In

On May 2, police reported that 22-year-old Ja’quavius Daniels voluntarily surrendered to authorities the night before. Daniels is now facing a felony murder charge, a legal consequence stemming from his involvement in the burglary that resulted in the death of his accomplice—even though he did not pull the trigger himself. Under Florida law, if someone dies during the commission of a felony, all participants can be held responsible for the death.

This case underscores the importance of understanding both your rights and responsibilities as a firearm owner. The homeowner’s response appears to fall within Florida’s “Castle Doctrine,” which allows residents to use deadly force if they reasonably believe it’s necessary to prevent death or great bodily harm during a home invasion.

Incidents like this remind responsible gun owners of the importance of firearm training, situational awareness, and secure storage when not in use. It’s also a clear example of how concealed carry and home protection measures can play a critical role in personal safety.

Safety Tip: Always have a home defense plan that includes access to a secured firearm, basic training for household members, and a clear understanding of your state’s self-defense laws.
