CHICAGO, IL (2-minute read) — A road rage incident escalated into gunfire Tuesday night in Chicago’s Dunning neighborhood, ending with a car smashed into a building and one suspect on the run.

According to the Chicago Police Department, the situation began around 10 p.m. near the 7700 block of Belmont Avenue. A 23-year-old man was traveling eastbound when he was involved in a dispute with another driver heading in the same direction. The confrontation quickly turned dangerous when the other driver pulled a firearm and began firing at the 23-year-old.

In response, the younger man—who is a licensed concealed carry holder—returned fire in self-defense. The gunfire exchange occurred while both vehicles were still in motion. The assailant eventually lost control of his vehicle and crashed into a nearby building. Despite the severity of the incident, no injuries have been reported at this time.

After the crash, the aggressor fled the scene on foot, leaving behind a bullet-riddled vehicle with visible damage, particularly to the passenger-side window. Police combed the area overnight, collecting shell casings and other evidence to piece together what led up to the shooting.

Self-Defense on the Road: What You Need to Know

Incidents like this highlight the importance of both de-escalation techniques and knowing the legal boundaries of defensive gun use. While the concealed carry holder appears to have acted within his rights, it’s a stark reminder that carrying a firearm also carries immense responsibility.

For those who legally carry, training doesn’t stop after getting a permit. Regular practice, understanding local laws, and learning situational awareness strategies are crucial for ensuring responsible self-defense. Road rage is unfortunately common, but using a firearm should always be the last resort when no other safe option remains.

Safety Tip: Always avoid confrontations on the road. If you’re carrying, your primary goal is to de-escalate and avoid using your firearm unless absolutely necessary. Regularly review your state’s self-defense laws to stay compliant and safe.
