A late evening confrontation outside Ballys Casino in downtown Shreveport ended with one man in the hospital after being cut with a glass bottle by the person he allegedly attacked. Police say drugs may have played a role in the incident, which is being treated as a possible act of self defense while detectives continue to review video and interview witnesses.

SHREVEPORT, LA (3-minute read) — Emergency crews rushed to Ballys Casino in downtown Shreveport on Monday night after a stabbing was reported just before 9 p.m. The casino sits along Clyde Fant Memorial Parkway between Fannin and Texas streets, a busy area that was quickly filled with flashing lights from patrol cars and ambulances as police and firefighters arrived.

According to the Shreveport Police Department, a casino guest was standing outside the building when another man walked up and started a confrontation. Investigators say that man, identified as Bernard Miles, appeared to be under the influence of drugs when he began attacking the guest. In the struggle that followed, the guest fought back using a glass bottle and cut Miles. Officers believe the guest acted in self defense during the fight. Miles was taken to a local hospital with serious, possibly life threatening injuries but is expected to survive. The guest told officers he does not wish to press charges against Miles, and detectives are still working to sort out the full sequence of events.

At least ten Shreveport Police units and several medical crews from the fire department responded to the scene. Inside and outside the casino, detectives pulled surveillance video and spoke with witnesses who saw the confrontation unfold. Their early findings point to Miles as the one who started the physical assault, which led the guest to respond with force in an effort to protect himself.

Shreveport casino stabbing and self defense questions

Cases like this sit in a gray area where self defense, possible drug use, and crowded public spaces all collide. In many parts of Louisiana, self defense law allows a person to use reasonable force if they genuinely believe they face an immediate threat of serious harm. That does not mean every act of force will be treated as justified. Investigators still review video, witness statements, medical reports, and the level of force used compared to the threat.

Even when a person clearly acts to protect themselves, they can still face intense questioning, possible arrest, or civil lawsuits. Anyone who carries a concealed firearm or relies on any tool for personal protection should understand that every punch, strike, or defensive action will be examined frame by frame later. Good training stresses avoiding trouble early, creating distance, and using force only when there is no other safe option left.

For people who visit casinos or other crowded entertainment areas, situational awareness may be the most useful skill you bring with you. Watching body language, steering clear of people who seem intoxicated or agitated, and staying in well lit, camera covered areas can reduce your odds of being caught in someone else’s bad decisions. If you do carry a firearm legally, it is important to know the casino’s policies, state law, and to remember that drawing a firearm is a last resort when you truly believe your life is in immediate danger.

Shreveport Police say Miles is expected to recover, and the investigation into the incident is still ongoing as detectives decide whether any charges will be filed and against whom.

Safety Tip: If you legally carry a firearm, pair that responsibility with regular training in conflict avoidance and verbal de escalation, since the safest fight is the one you never have to enter.
