San Diego Police Release Video Of Deadly Standoff In Miramar Ranch

Authorities in San Diego released video footage of a fatal police shooting involving a 59-year-old man who allegedly pointed a firearm at construction workers and later aimed it at SWAT officers. The tense standoff ended when two SWAT snipers opened fire, killing the man at the scene.

SAN DIEGO, CA (3-minute read) — Authorities have released new video footage of a fatal police shooting that occurred during a tense standoff in the Miramar Ranch North neighborhood of San Diego on March 25. The incident resulted in the death of 59-year-old Eric Kulakow, who was shot by SWAT snipers after allegedly pointing a firearm at both civilians and law enforcement officers.

The incident began shortly after noon when police received a report about a man threatening a construction crew with a handgun on Angelique Street. While responding, officers learned the same individual had also reportedly menaced a pest control technician from Orkin, who was forced to take cover behind his work truck and eventually hid inside the vehicle’s cargo area.

When officers arrived, they found Kulakow barefoot in a driveway on Little Silver Court, wearing ear protection and brandishing a handgun. Aerial footage captured from a police helicopter shows him erratically pointing the firearm—sometimes toward the Orkin vehicle, other times into the air—ignoring commands to drop the gun.

SWAT Snipers Act as Standoff Escalates

As the situation grew more dangerous, San Diego SWAT team members took strategic positions nearby. One officer settled in a field while another secured a balcony vantage point. Additional units worked on a plan to safely rescue the pest control worker, who remained trapped near the armed suspect.

Roughly 45 minutes into the standoff, Kulakow reportedly walked toward the intersection of Angelique Street and Little Silver Court. There, he allegedly aimed his handgun at approaching officers attempting the rescue. In response, SWAT Officers Brandon Jordan and Chris Lingenhol discharged their sniper rifles. Kulakow was struck and collapsed; his firearm landed at his feet.

At this time, investigators have not identified a clear motive for Kulakow’s actions.

While the incident concluded without injuries to bystanders or officers, it’s a stark reminder of how quickly a volatile situation can escalate, and how being prepared to defend yourself can save your life.

Safety Tip: Always store firearms securely and be mindful of mental health indicators in those around you. If someone seems unstable and has access to a firearm, notify authorities immediately.
