A traffic altercation on Hilton Head Island escalated into a violent stabbing, sending a 62-year-old man to the hospital and resulting in attempted murder charges for the suspect. HILTON HEAD ISLAND, SC (2-minute read) — A Sunday evening drive turned violent near a shopping center on Hilton Head Island, where a 62-year-old man was stabbed multiple times following a heated traffic altercation. The suspect, 39-year-old Sean Brandon Elliott, was arrested on charges of attempted murder and possession of a firearm during a violent crime. He remains in custody at the Beaufort County Detention Center.

According to the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office, the confrontation began when the victim turned onto Shelter Cove Lane around 7:30 p.m. and heard something strike his vehicle. What started as a verbal dispute escalated rapidly. Both men exited their cars, and Elliott allegedly pulled a pocketknife and stabbed the older man several times during the scuffle.

The victim was rushed to a local hospital by Hilton Head Island Fire-Rescue and treated for non-life-threatening injuries. The suspect’s bond has not yet been set.

Why Situational Awareness and Self-Defense Matter

This incident serves as a grim reminder that violence can erupt from even the most ordinary situations. You never know who might be behind the wheel of the other car, or how quickly things can spiral out of control.

Carrying a concealed firearm legally and responsibly isn’t about being paranoid. It’s about being prepared. When emotions run high, especially in situations like road rage, having the means to defend yourself or de-escalate could be the difference between life and death.

But carrying is only part of the equation. Equally important is developing a strong sense of situational awareness and knowing when to walk away or call for help before things get physical. Not every conflict needs to end in violence, but when it does, you’ll want to be ready to protect yourself and your loved ones.

Safety Tip: If you carry a firearm, remember that de-escalation is your first line of defense. Only use force as a last resort when your life is in immediate danger, and always be aware of your surroundings before stepping into a potentially volatile situation.
