MEMPHIS, TN (2-minute read) — A robbery attempt at Twin Food Mart in Memphis early Tuesday morning ended with one suspect shot and two men fleeing the scene, police confirmed.

According to authorities, the incident occurred just after 3:35 a.m. at the store located at 766 Jackson Avenue. The business owner reported that two men entered his store, one brandishing a black handgun and the other moving around behind the counter.

The situation escalated quickly. The suspect with the firearm confronted the owner directly while the second suspect entered the employee area through a side counter door. The store owner, who was armed, drew his firearm and ordered the men to leave.

Rather than retreat, one of the suspects attacked the owner, pushing him to the ground and striking him in the head. The suspect then attempted to disarm the store owner during the struggle.

Fighting back, the owner managed to fire his handgun, striking the suspect. Both suspects immediately fled the scene, even though one of them had been hit. As of now, the suspects are still at large and Memphis Police are continuing their investigation.

Self-Defense in Armed Robbery Situations

Incidents like this highlight the harsh reality business owners face, especially when operating during overnight hours. Criminals often target convenience stores in the early morning, banking on lower foot traffic and limited staff. This is where training in firearm handling and defensive tactics becomes essential.

Concealed carriers and business owners should not only be familiar with local firearm laws but also practice real-world self-defense scenarios. Drawing a firearm under pressure, retaining control of the firearm in a physical struggle, and knowing when to pull the trigger are all critical skills that can mean the difference between life and death.

Safety Tip: If you carry a firearm for self-defense, regularly train in retention and close-quarters combat. Physical struggles are chaotic, and being prepared can keep you in control of your firearm.
