WASHINGTON, D.C. (3-minute read) — President Donald Trump has declared a formal “crime emergency” in the nation’s capital, citing record-breaking violence, robberies, and vehicle thefts that have outpaced all 50 states. The executive order, issued on August 11, 2025, gives the federal government temporary operational authority over the Metropolitan Police Department for the purpose of protecting federal property, employees, and visitors.

In 2024, Washington, D.C., recorded a homicide rate of 27.54 per 100,000 residents, placing it among the most dangerous cities in the world. Car thefts reached 842.4 per 100,000 residents, more than triple the national average. According to the order, this spike in violent crime is disrupting the functioning of the federal government, hindering recruitment of essential workers, and threatening the safety of both residents and tourists.

Federal Response to Rising Crime

Under the Home Rule Act, the President can direct the city’s police force for federal purposes during emergencies. In this case, Attorney General oversight will ensure the Metropolitan Police Department prioritizes securing federal buildings, monuments, and public areas essential to government operations. The order requires the D.C. Mayor to provide these services for the maximum duration allowed by law.

While local control of police forces is the norm, federal intervention of this kind is rare, underscoring the severity of the current crime wave. The administration’s stated goal is to make Washington, D.C., one of the safest cities in the world, reversing its trajectory as one of the most violent.

For residents, this order could mean a visible increase in law enforcement presence around high-crime areas, government facilities, and major transit hubs. For concealed carriers and self-defense advocates, it’s a reminder that even in highly policed cities, personal awareness and readiness are critical.

Safety Tip: When traveling in urban areas with high crime rates, keep valuables out of sight, maintain strong situational awareness, and know the local laws regarding carrying and transporting firearms.
