The Brief:

A two-year-old boy from Georgia died after being accidentally shot by a four-year-old relative in Kissimmee, Florida. The incident occurred in a vacation rental driveway when the older child found an unsecured, loaded handgun inside a vehicle while adults unloaded luggage. The toddler later died at a hospital.

The Osceola County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the incident for potential criminal charges under Florida’s safe storage laws. Authorities stressed that the tragedy was preventable through proper firearm security. They are urging gun owners to use safety locks and secure weapons, especially when traveling with children in high-distraction environments.

KISSIMMEE, FL — A heavy cloud of grief hangs over a Central Florida vacation community after a split second of unsecured firearm storage cost a toddler his life. According to investigative reports compiled by Osceola County detectives, a family from Jefferson County, Georgia, had just completed a long road trip to celebrate the 2-year-old’s upcoming birthday.

At approximately midday on Sunday, July 12, 2026, the family pulled their vehicle into the driveway of a short-term vacation rental located in the Kissimmee area.

The Fatal Discovery in the Driveway

Excited to settle into the rental property, the adults exited the vehicle to open the home’s entrance and begin transferring their bags inside. During this brief transition, the 2-year-old boy remained buckled in his car seat.

At the same time, a 4-year-old relative went back inside the vehicle. While in the car, the older child found a fully loaded handgun sitting completely open and unsecured, without even a basic holster to protect the trigger guard.

The 4-year-old picked up the firearm. As he handled the weapon, a single round discharged, striking the 2-year-old in a catastrophic trajectory. The family, who had not yet set foot inside the rental house, heard the gunshot shatter the quiet afternoon and ran back to find the toddler critically injured.

First responders arrived on scene within minutes and initiated emergency stabilization protocols. The wounded toddler was rushed to Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children in Orlando. Despite the valiant efforts of trauma physicians, the young boy succumbed to his injuries a short time later.

Rising Legal Pressure and Free Gun Locks

The sheriff’s office has launched a comprehensive investigation alongside the Florida Department of Children and Families and the Medical Examiner’s Office. While no immediate arrests have been made, detectives are actively meeting with the State Attorney’s Office to determine appropriate criminal charges.

“It’s not a video game; you can’t hit reset and start over,” Osceola County Sheriff Marcos Lopez warned during a press briefing, emphasizing the horrific, permanent nature of firearm accidents. “Once you pull that trigger, that projectile is going somewhere.”

The Sheriff’s Office is urging the public to take advantage of free cable gun locks distributed at their administrative headquarters, stressing that a simple, five-dollar safety lock would have completely prevented this heartbreaking loss of life.

The Law: Florida’s Child Access Prevention Statute

While the tragedy has devastated the family, the gun owner faces severe potential criminal liabilities under Florida Statute § 790.174. Florida enforces a strict Child Access Prevention (CAP) law:

  • Secure Storage Mandate: If a gun owner knows, or reasonably should know, that a minor under the age of 16 is likely to gain access to a firearm, they must secure the weapon with a trigger lock, keep it in a locked safe/box, or keep it on their immediate person.
  • Criminal Charges: Failing to secure a firearm that a child accesses and uses to cause severe injury or death is classified as a third-degree felony, carrying a potential penalty of up to 5 years in state prison.

Safety Tip: This devastating tragedy serves as a solemn reminder of the vital importance of “Vehicle Firearm Discipline.” A vehicle’s center console, glove compartment, or door pocket is not a secure gun safe. When you are traveling long distances with children, the chaos of arriving at your destination, navigating unfamiliar properties, and unloading heavy luggage creates a high-distraction environment. During these transitional moments, your defensive tools must never be left loose or unattended in a vehicle. If you must carry a firearm while traveling, it should remain securely locked in a vehicle console safe, strapped inside a high-retention holster on your immediate person, or safely locked away in a portable travel safe before anyone exits the car. Taking just ten seconds to secure your weapon is the difference between a safe family getaway and a lifetime of preventable heartbreak.
