The TAC 2026 Kentucky Derby Preview
SHARE

Saturday evening marks the 152nd running of the Kentucky Derby in Louisville, Kentucky. Nineteen horses are expected to race in the granddaddy of them all and it’s my pleasure to provide some important details about the world’s greatest thoroughbred race should you decide to lay a lucky ticket or simply sit back and enjoy the show.

Renegade, the favorite in this year’s race, will start from post position 1. The inside is not the place to be. Since 1930, post position 1 has accounted for only 20 percent of all win, place, and show finishes, meaning Renegade will have his work cut out for him. It’s a tough break for the horse and owner Mike Repole, who is searching for his first Derby victory after going 0–8 in his career. That record doesn’t include three horses that were scratched in the lead up to the Derby, including would-be favorites Uncle Mo and Forte.

The jockey Irad Ortiz Jr. is also winless at the Derby though he has earned the distinction of being named an Eclipse Award winner on five occasions, denoting him as the nation’s most outstanding jockey. The Hall of Fame trainer Todd Pletcher has put Renegade through his paces, coaching him to victory in the 2026 Grade 1 Arkansas Derby on March 28 at Oaklawn Park against several other top favorites in this year’s Derby field. At 4–1 odds to win, Renegade is the clear-cut favorite in this year’s race despite the difficult starting spot. He’s a talented horse with a cursed owner, a loyal jockey, and a Hall of Fame trainer. It won’t be easy, but he’s got all the ingredients to make things interesting.

Chief Wallabee will begin from post 12, a sweet spot which should favor the outside stalking style Wallabee has shown in each of his three starts. Wallabee’s trainer Bill Mott and jockey Junior Alvarado are attempting to win back-to-back Kentucky Derbies; the pair were victorious with Sovereignty in muddy conditions last year. Wallabee won his debut race at Gulfstream Park in January and finished third in the Grade 1 Florida Derby after starting the race as the betting favorite. Though he fell behind The Puma and Commandment in a thrilling final stretch run, it was a neck-and-neck finish that has many believing Wallabee will be in the thick of it come Saturday in Kentucky. He sits at 8–1 odds in the pari-mutuels.

Commandment, the horse that defeated Chief Wallabee in the Florida Derby, is the most accomplished thoroughbred in the field. He’s won every start in 2026 and earned more than $1 million in prize money along the way. His impressive performance in Florida not only earned him 100 Kentucky Derby qualifying points, but also placed him at the very top of the Kentucky Derby standings heading into Saturday. Trainer Brad Cox is a Louisville native who worked his way to the top and will be searching for his second Kentucky Derby win.

Commandment’s jockey, Luis Saez, thought he had won the Kentucky Derby in 2019 when he finished first on Maximum Security. But the win was later vacated after it was deemed his horse made contact with other racers. As such, Saez will be looking for his first official win in Kentucky on Saturday.

Commandment will start from post 6, an advantageous spot that should allow him to navigate the field with ease if he gets a clean break. By Into Mischief out of a daughter of 2013 Kentucky Derby winner Orb, Commandment has a pedigree that is among the finest in the entire field. Distance will be the biggest question for Commandment, but his 6–1 odds to win the race are warranted.

Further Ado is another Brad Cox–trained horse, listed at 6–1 odds to win the Derby. That’s a rare achievement for any trainer, and with the legendary jockey John Velazquez, who has won three Kentucky Derbies, Further Ado has the training and stewardship to compete with the best in the field. The beautiful chestnut colt won the 2026 Grade 1 Blue Grass Stakes by an impressive 11 lengths and has the highest speed figure of any horse in Saturday’s field. That motor should bode well for him on the longer track. The biggest thing going against Further Ado is his starting position in post 17. No horse has ever won the Kentucky Derby from post 17. Despite the cursed stall, the betting markets still have Further Ado as one of Saturday’s favorites.

The Puma, one of Saturday’s favorites, was scratched at the last minute when a swollen pastern in its left front was detected on the day of the race. Its exclusion opens up an opportunity for Emerging Market, one of the most fascinating horses in the Derby. Of the 19 horses set to race, Emerging Market is the only horse without Secretariat in his bloodline. Market’s trainer Chad Brown is one of the most respected names in the racing industry, and jockey Flavien Prat elected to mount Market instead of Florida Derby winner Commandment, a notable vote of confidence. The thoroughbred from Stoneriggs Farm in Paris, Kentucky took home first place in the Louisiana Derby and is priced at 15–1 on the morning line.

Several horses are worth noting beyond the top-end favorites. The horse So Happy will look to make bettors happy as he breaks from the 8th position with odds of 15–1. His jockey Mike Smith is one of the great riders in the history of the sport and was inducted into the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame in 2003. He became the oldest jockey to ever win the Triple Crown at the age of 52 when he piloted Justify to victories at the Kentucky Derby, Belmont, and the Preakness.

And finally, it wouldn’t be a Derby preview without mentioning Danon Bourbon, a thoroughbred born in Kentucky but trained and run in Japan. Bourbon is a promising 3-year-old with a pedigree that includes the legends Seattle Slew, Affirmed, and Secretariat. He’s a big, powerful horse that ran a record-setting time at the 2026 Fukuryu Stakes in Chiba, Japan. Last year, Japanese horses were all the rage as Admire Daytona and Luxor Cafe both made appearances at America’s premier thoroughbred race. With Bourbon at 20–1 odds and less interest than either Daytona or Cafe, he’s got a great opportunity to shock the field.

For casual bettors looking for some action on Saturday, it’s hard to argue against buying a ticket on the favorite Renegade. At 4–1, you’re getting good odds on the most proven horse in the field. Despite starting from post position 1, a favorite hasn’t won the Kentucky Derby in seven years, the longest drought since 1999. Odds suggest that drought will be broken on Saturday. If you’re looking for something a bit longer, try your luck on Danon Bourbon, the Japanese-trained thoroughbred sitting in a great post position with a chance to pay heavy at 20–1 odds. Finally, it wouldn’t be the Kentucky Derby without mentioning Bob Baffert, the most decorated trainer in Derby history. His horse Potente sits at 20–1 on the morning line and is worth a consideration if you’re placing a bet.

The Run for the Roses is a defining sports spectacle in American culture. It’s a tradition like no other that pits the best 3-year-old horses in the world against each other. Here’s hoping your cup remains full and your ticket hits.
